One of the major sports codes supported on the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus is rugby, and this campus boasts a highly acclaimed Rugby Institute, of which three players were included in the South African u-20 team in 2011. During the same year, the rugby team triumphed as South Africa’s club champions and won the annual intervarsity when they gave the team from the University of the Free State (UFS) a thrashing for the seventh consecutive year. Since the inception of Rugby Institute in 2000, with former Springbok player and coach André Markgraaf as its first executive director, the first team has been crowned as the Leopards club champion for seven consecutive years. They have won the Pirates Grand Challenge six times and since 2004 they have won the National Club Championshhips four times. In 2006 and 2007 they won the FNB SETE blrosjure konsep ontwerp.indd 6 09/04/12 14:48:31 Superbowl and the campus hostel league has grown from 14 teams to 38. The institute has produced more than 100 provincial rugby (including Springbok and Sevens) players who ply their trade in South Africa and abroad. The rugby team of the Vaal Triangle Campus took part in the USSA championships for the first time in 2011 and received a trophy in recognition of their performance. In addition, five teams participated in the Falcons Super League, with one player elected for the Falcons Senior Vodacom Cup team. The NWU Vaal rugby club plans to participate in the Varsity Shield in 2012.
